Fish Oil May Lower Breast Cancer Risk in Women

There are several different classifications of breast cancer. Recent research adds strong support to the use of fish oil in reducing the most common classification, known as invasive ductal carcinoma.

A study conducted by researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, included 35,016 postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 76. Participants were members of the VITamins And Lifestyle (VITAL) study group. Subjects completed a 24-page baseline questionnaire that asked about recent (current versus past) supplement use. Frequency and duration of supplementation were also recorded. The women were asked specifically about the use of supplements other than basic vitamins and minerals.

After six years of follow-up, researchers found that regular use of fish oil supplements was associated with a 32 percent reduction in breast cancer risk. The reduced risk was limited to the most common form of breast cancer (the aforementioned invasive ductal carcinoma), which represents nearly 80% of diagnosed breast cancer cases. The highest level of benefit was also determined to be in women who were current users of fish oil.

Fish oil is a rich source of EPA (eicosapentoaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), two omega-3 fatty acids that have been studied extensively for prevention and treatment of various health conditions, including heart disease, arthritis and inflammatory conditions, macular degeneration, and depression. The results from this study give strong support to the possibility that regular fish oil consumption may also be associated with a reduced risk of the most common form of breast cancer.

USANA Health Sciences Reports Third Quarter Financial Results

  • Third quarter net sales increased by 9.0% to $254.2 million
  • Third quarter EPS increased by 25.0% to $2.40
  • Number of active Associates increased by 12.6% to 456,000
  • Company announces 2 for 1 stock split

October 25, 2016 04:15 PM Eastern Daylight Time

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--USANA Health Sciences, Inc. (NYSE: USNA) today announced financial results for its fiscal third quarter ended October 1, 2016.

“Despite these growing pains, during the quarter we introduced one of the greatest product innovations in USANA’s history with the launch of our Incelligence™ product platform at our International Convention in August”

Net sales for the third quarter of 2016 increased by 9.0% to $254.2 million, compared with $233.3 million in the prior-year period, but came in below the Company’s expectations due to softer-than-anticipated sales in the Greater China region. The increase in net sales is attributed to a 12.6% increase in the number of active Associates and a 5.6% increase in the number of Preferred Customers. The continued strength of the U.S. dollar negatively impacted net sales during the quarter by $5.7 million.

Net earnings for the third quarter of 2016 increased to $30.1 million, an increase of 17.5% compared to $25.6 million in the prior-year period. The increase in net earnings was due primarily to a meaningfully lower effective tax rate, as well as higher net sales, which were partially offset by higher operating expenses during the quarter. The significant decrease in the effective tax rate for the third quarter is due to the Company’s early adoption of ASU 2016-09 (Topic 718) - Improvements to Employee Share-Based Payment Accounting. As a result of USANA’s adoption of this standard, on a year-over-year basis, the Company recognized (i) modestly higher equity compensation expense, (ii) a higher diluted share count, and (iii) a meaningfully lower effective tax rate for the current-year quarter due to the recognition of excess tax benefits on the income statement pursuant to this standard (excess tax benefits were previously recognized as an adjustment to equity). For the third quarter, the Company’s adoption of this standard increased net earnings by approximately $6.5 million, or $0.50 on a diluted per share basis.

Earnings per diluted share for the third quarter increased by 25.0% to $2.40, compared with $1.92 in the prior year period. The increase in earnings per share was the result of the adoption of the previously noted accounting standard as well as a lower number of diluted shares outstanding due to the Company’s share repurchases over the last 12 months. Weighted average diluted shares outstanding were 12.5 million as of the end of the third quarter of 2016, compared with 13.3 million in the prior-year period.

The Company’s balance sheet remains strong with $134.5 million in cash and cash equivalents. As of October 1, 2016, the Company also had $35.4 million remaining under its current share repurchase authorization.

“While USANA posted another quarter of solid growth and achievements, our topline results in the Greater China region came in below our expectations and impacted our overall results,” said Dave Wentz, USANA’s Co-CEO. “Our top priorities for 2016 continue to be completing the transition to our state-of-the-art production facility in Beijing and enhancing our information technology infrastructure around the world. These improvements are essential to allow USANA to continue providing the highest level of customer service and to provide the foundation for future growth. Our focus on these objectives, however, has taken precedence over short-term initiatives to drive sales growth around the world in 2016 and also affected our momentum in China during the quarter. I am pleased to report, however, that during the quarter we received all of the necessary permits to begin production in our new China facility and we now anticipate that the facility will be fully operational by the end of the year. With this facility coming online, we are making preparations to begin offering growth initiatives in China in early 2017, but continue to believe that we will be in a better position to fully drive growth in China and our other markets when the improvements to our IT infrastructure are complete.”

“Despite these growing pains, during the quarter we introduced one of the greatest product innovations in USANA’s history with the launch of our Incelligence™ product platform at our International Convention in August,” continued Mr. Wentz. “Incelligence™ is USANA’s proprietary, patent-pending technology that is designed to support your body’s natural ability to nourish, protect and renew itself. As part of our Incelligence™ platform, we also launched our new flagship multivitamin, CellSentials™, at convention. These launches, and our convention in general, were a huge success. We set new records for sales and attendance at our convention and our 2017 event has already sold out. Incelligence™ is being launched in our various markets around the world and is a key part of our growth strategy.”

Flavonoid Intake is Associated with Lower Incidence of Depression In Women

Flavonoids are phytonutrients (plant nutrients) found in tea, chocolate, red wine and many fruits and vegetables. They are already known to offer protective cardiovascular health effects and other health benefits, however the effect of flavonoid intake on depression has been unclear up to this point. Researchers from Harvard published an article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition analyzing data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Nurses’ Health Study II, looking at potential links between flavonoid intake and depression.

The Nurses’ Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study II included 82,643 women without a previous history of depression. Over a period of 10 years of follow-up, a total of 10,752 incidents of depression were found. Analysis of flavonoid intake and depression frequency revealed that the highest quintile of total flavonoid, polymer, and proanthocyanidin intake was associated with a 9-12% decreased risk of depression. Lower intakes were associated with a reverse linear, but still significant decrease in depression risk. In women over 65 years, the results had even stronger statistical relevance and did so with almost all classes of flavonoids.

Flavonoid intake is associated with lower incidences of depression, with particularly strong links at the highest intakes and in older women. Not only does this study offer evidence that flavonoid intake may decrease the likelihood of depression, but it provides further evidence about the overall health benefits of flavonoid intake.

USANA's BiOmega is an ultra-pure fish-oil supplement that supports cardiovascular, immune and joint health.

USANA Changes The World Of Nutritional Science

USANA Changes The World Of Nutritional Science

Patent-Pending USANA InCelligence Technology™

SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- USANA Health Sciences is pleased to announce an innovative technological advancement: its U.S. patent-pending USANA InCelligence Technology™. This exclusive cell-signaling technology—now found in various USANA® products—is designed to help your body's cells renew and protect themselves in unique and powerful ways, representing a monumental leap forward in cellular nutrition and overall wellness.*

"USANA continues to build a reputation as an innovator in the science of cellular health and nutritional supplementation," says USANA Founder Dr. Myron Wentz. "With USANA's InCelligence Technology, we are ensuring that our company remains on the cutting-edge of nutritional supplementation."

How InCelligence Cell-Signaling Technology Works

  • Human cells demonstrate a natural intelligence (or InCelligence), which acts on information from plant-derived biomolecules found in our foods.
  • Traditional multivitamin supplements simply supply building materials, while USANA's InCelligence Technology puts the builders to work, directly triggering your body's natural protection and renewal processes. (Think of it as the ability to have a conversation with your cells to help them do even more of what they do best.)*
  • InCelligence technology helps build your cells' resilience and their ability to adapt, which then helps your body meet its unique needs.*

InCelligence: Found in New, Innovative Products

With its U.S. patent-pending cell-signaling InCelligence Complex, USANA has created a cutting-edge product to support your body's natural ability to make its own protective antioxidants, which are even stronger than those in just about any supplement. CellSentials™ contains a triple-action system that protects, renews, and nourishes cells for optimal cellular function.*

So what does all this really mean? Let's hear from the expert:

"Our bodies are made up of trillions of cells and many of them are constantly generating cellular energy to power processes in our bodies, like our heartbeat," says Executive Vice President of Research and Development Dr. Kevin Spelman.  "But this process can also generate free radicals that can damage the mitochondria within the cell. Fortunately, our cells have a natural process that helps clean any damaged mitochondria out of the cell to help renew efficient cellular function. Cellsentials help activate this process."

Also launching with USANA's InCelligence Technology is their newest product Proglucamune™, an immune-support supplement. Proglucamune is designed to help immune cells respond effectively and support the body's ability to adapt to occasional stress.*

Proglucamune Ingredients—Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science

  • Organic reishi and shiitake mushrooms: used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicines to support vitality*
  • Baker's yeast (specific strain): provides exceptional support for immunity and daily wellness, even during times of occasional, mild stress*
  • Zinc: an essential trace element that supports proper functioning of immune cells and acts as an antioxidant to help defend against oxidative stress*

It all works together to help keep you feeling fit and well, every day.*

Other USANA products that include the all-new InCelligence technology are Hepasil DTX™ and Procosa®.

The InCelligence Takeaway

InCelligence is the key to unlock the natural intelligence of your cells and will help support the health of your entire body, no matter what stress you put it through.*
